Based in Ankara, Turkey, the Lead, Health and Safety is responsible for leading the internal assurance programs of Teck’s global exploration activities, supporting in monitoring and auditing performance in each operating jurisdiction to identify non-compliances or opportunities for improvement and for providing Health and Safety (H&S) leadership to the Turkish staff. The position reports to the Manager, Exploration - Turkey, with a matrix reporting relationship to the Manager, Health & Safety. Collaboration and pro-active communication with Exploration managers & Health and Safety leads will be fundamental to the role.

The role includes active responsibility for ongoing projects in Turkey and ensuring internal assurance programs globally.

• Collaborating with other jurisdictions in the planning and implementation of internal assurance programs
• Improving efficiency of auditing practices
• Ensuring that Teck's Health and Safety management system requirements and standards are coordinated into planning and execution of all exploration activities in Turkey

Responsibilities:

• Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
• Proactively engage H&S Leads and provide leadership for auditing practices.
• Lead each jurisdiction’s internal assurance against:
• Auditing of systems and performance for compliance with Teck HSEC Management Standards, Critical Control Standards/HPRC Requirements and Exploration Guideline requirements in coordination and cooperation with H&S Leads
• Leading all aspects of Control Verification performance (relative to Project Risk Assessments and corporate CCV Standards)
• Provide Exploration & Geosciences leadership with information on performance:
• Report on performance against expectations and closure of subsequent corrective actions
• Delivery of ‘live’ Assurance Dashboard
• Keep track of assurance programs and ensuring that required support is provided
• Planning and delivering HSEC training, mentoring, and leading other development initiatives to equip exploration personnel to operate in accordance with Teck standards and the H&S management system requirements
• Deploying H&S resources in the field to support exploration activities
• Compiling and leading H&S expenditure according to the approved Planned Budget

Lead Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Mitigation and more specifically:

• Review existing processes and recommends changes as required
• Continuously seeks opportunities to recognize health, safety and environmental hazards and works to handle associated risks in the workplace
• Complete inspections & audits of worksites and equipment
• Lead all aspects of the implementation and execution of Critical Control Verification processes
• Provide leadership in EHS by anticipating current and future risks and managing these
• Contribute to the production and maintenance of the country/project risk assessments and ensure they are in the Risk Mapper
• Fulfill Critical Control Verification requirements in the Risk Mapper/Risk Planning system
• Contribution and provision of Teck Exploration EHS guidelines and procedures
• Leading the team/individuals through change by understanding the principles and impact of that change

Qualifications:

• Certificate or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
• A minimum of 10 years relevant experience on exploration or similar projects
• Broad technical understanding of health and safety issues in order to advise staff
• Proven ability and experience working with the laws and regulations relating to health and safety
• Can influence and drive positive change, experience in change management and workflow planning for self, others, and groups
• Strong written and verbal communication skills. Fluent proficiency in English and basic proficiency in Spanish language with intent to gain intermediate spoken and written skills
• Ability to effectively build and sustain positive work relationships with multiple internal customers across Teck
• Proficiency in systems implementation and management
• Excellent facilitation and interpersonal skills, experience working with a broad range of people across a range of technical and non-technical fields.
• High degree of initiative, self-motivation, accountability, and independent judgement
• Energetic, empowers others, and shares ownership and accountability for project outcomes
• Can identify learning and performance gaps in others and is effective in mentoring and developing others
