Communication Officer 

Background

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world'slargest humanitarian organization, with 190 member National Societies. Organizational Context

The Secretariat of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is organized into four Business groups in Geneva and five Business Groups in the field, namely the Regional Offices for Africa, Americas, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, and Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The Europe Region is organized through Clusters covering the National Societies in Eastern Western and Central Europe, Central Asia, Caucasus, Russian Federation and Belarus, Red Cross EU Office as well as country Offices in Greece, Turkey and Ukraine under the reorganized IFRC Secretariat, located in the Regional office in Europe.

The conflict in Syria has now entered its sixth year and created an overwhelming and enduring humanitarian crisis. Currently, some 5 million Syrian people are living in the countries alone neighbouring Syria, with further displacement beyond the region into other areas. About 3.7 million registered refugees are living in Turkey. IFRC partner is supporting the displaced people since the onset of the humanitarian crisis. IFRC initially launched an Emergency Appeal on 9 November 2012, which later on transformed into an International Appeal to support the IFRC partner to deliver assistance and support to most vulnerable displaced people living in Turkey.

The Communication Officer reports to the Integrated Programme Coordinator and follows the technical direction and guidance of the Communication Managerin the IFRC Regional Office for Europe, Budapest.

The Communication Officer will be responsible for positioning and content gathering across all sectors of the operation in coordination with IFRC partner to support and enhances the work and efficiency of IFRC Turkey Population Movement Operation International Appeal in response to migration crisis. He/She will also contribute and support in the implementation of  EU TF MADAD supported communication/visibility plan as well HIP Protection  project together with the IFRC partner.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent shall:

  • To support the IFRC Office communications response and generate content for use related to ongoing operation in Turkey particularly for MADAD supported project as well a across the global IFRC network.
  • Produce/assist in the production of the content/materials as per MADAD communication and visibility plan and other promotional requirements, in coordination with the IFRC partner communication team.
  • Facilitate field visits of communications counterparts and media as required
  • Reactive and proactive international media relations, in coordination with the IFRC RoE communications manager.
  • Write and update regularly key messages, facts and figures, and reactive lines with support of IFRC RoE communications manager
  • Generate web stories, blogs, photos with captions and video content, for distribution across print and digital channels in relation to the ongoing MADAD supported project
  • Assist in the production of information bulletins and marketing tools to support on-going operation 

Education:

  • University degree in journalism, communications, marketing or international policies.

 

Experience required:

  • At least 3 years of experience working as journalist/press officer and/or Communications Officer.
  • Experience in managing communications issues in complex and delicate situations.
  • Solid experience in media relations and acting as a spokesperson.
  • Experience in building media contacts.
  • IT skills – proficiency in Microsoft and Adobe programmes 

Experience preferred 

  • Social media monitoring, web publishing
  • AV editing
  • Experience of working for a humanitarian aid organization

Knowledge, skills and languages

  • Fluently spoken and written English and Turkish
  • Excellent research and writing skills.
