Sunum Laboratory Specialist

Sabancı University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center (SUNUM) is planning to appoint a Laboratory Specialist to support our developing research program covering uses of Nanotechnology in Agriculture.  This job is an opportunity for a disciplined and self-motivated early career scientist to gain experience carrying out research at the interface between academia and the agricultural industry. 

The appointed person make a significant scientific contribution to a TÜBİTAK 1505 project entitled “Kabak yapraklarında gümüşlenme fizyolojik bozukluğunun genetik analizi ve moleküler ıslahı aracılığıyla dayanıklı hatların geliştirilmesi / Genetic analysis of squash silverleaf disorder and development of resistant lines by molecular breeding.” Their responsibilities will include:

-          Doing literature research and using the findings to design and improve biological assays

-          Establishing and maintaining plants in controlled growth conditions and tissue culture

-          Carrying out molecular biology experiments, including cloning, transfection and gene editing

-          Screening plant populations for Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) markers

-          Providing regular and detailed experimental reports

-          Taking part in field work and discussions with our industrial partners

As a laboratory specialist, they will also be expected become an expert user for selected instruments (training will be provided).  Initially this is expected to include High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and real-time PCR (qPCR), but other responsibilities may be added in due course.   In this role, they will support the wider SUNUM research programme by:

-          Assisting other users in planning, setting up and carrying out experiments

-          Developing standard operating procedures and ensuring that they are adhered to

-          Monitoring use of the equipment and identifying maintenance needs

-          Carrying out tests and analysis as a service for external users

Candidates for this position must have:

-          MSc and/or PhD from an internationally recognised institution in Molecular Biology & Genetics or a related subject

-          At least 3 years practical laboratory experience in molecular biology

-          Evidence of academic output (publications, conference presentations) from their previous research

-          Good communication and team-working skills

Previous experience in HPLC, qPCR, plant tissue culture and/or nanoparticle characterization (FTIR & UV-Vis spectroscopy) would be an advantage.
